Shades of Brown

It’s amazing how soon even ridiculously popular writers get forgotten. When did you last see an Alistair Maclean book for sale? Remember Frederick Forsythe, in his day the world’s highest paid author per word? Was Dan Brown still on your Christmas list last year?

Now, I don’t begrudge these people their fame and fortune. I just wish more people had it.

When Dan Brown’s name was impossible to escape a few years ago, I could never see it without wishing I could change that first name to Larry…

Larry Brown was a fireman who wrote some very good books. I very much doubt that Dan Brown ever wrote anything as good as Larry. Equally, I doubt that Larry ever made a nearly as much money as Dan.

Poor old Larry Brown died in the meantime, so there’s nothing we can do now to give him his rightful due. But we can do ourselves a favour – read his books.
